After a little more than a dozen blog posts, it’s time for my adventures in Far Cry Primal to come to a close. It has been an interesting and enjoyable journey that, aside from giving me the opportunity to play a really good game, also gave me the excuse I needed to delve back into books and articles on the Stone Age. As I said in my first post, there’s something instinctively appealing about the world of our hunter-gatherer ancestors.
How far we’ve come since Tutorial Land! Before the Easter break, I had wandered through Oros, completing most of the specialist missions, including those of comic relief character Urki. Today, I will finish the main plot of the game by slaying the leaders of the two rival tribes: Ull of the cannibalistic Udam and Batari of the fire-worshipping Izila.
This is a post about Far Cry Primal, but it isn’t part of my game diary series. There is a research group called VALUE, short for Videogames and Archaeology at Leiden UnivErsity (not a typo). And it so happened that they organized a meeting earlier today at the university to talk about Far Cry Primal: how it depicts the Stone Age (with a heavy emphasis on the Mesolithic), and what it says about the (possibly innate) human proclivity toward violence.
As I wrote in my previous entry, we have two missions open to us that will conclude the main story line of the game. Sayla’s old enemy, Ull, is now within reach in the northern Udam homelands. Likewise, I now also have access to the hideout of Batari, the leader of the Izila and Tensay the shaman’s nemesis. I will try and deal with each of them soon, but for now I want to do some other missions.
Rather than post another entry in my series of Far Cry Primal game diaries today (the next one will be posted tomorrow), I thought it would be fun to instead re-publish a short story by Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian, that is set in the Stone Age. ‘Spear and fang’ was published in the magazine Weird Tales in 1925 (and is now in the public domain virtually everywhere). It’s the first story that Howard ever managed to sell. While a little rough in places, it does contain many of the hallmarks of Howard’s later, more refined work.
Sayla told me to head north to pick the yellow flowers of a rare plant. She would be able to make an antidote against rot fumes, allowing me to access the main fort of Ull, the leader of the cannibalistic Udam. Dutifully, I head north, as indicated by the marker on my map, and soon find the location with the yellow flowers. I pick one, at which point I get enveloped by a green mist. Some Udam appear and hit me over the head. Lights out.
At the end of my previous post, I had just assaulted, with some difficulty, a heavily-defended Izila fort. With my tamed animals, I managed to nevertheless defeat all the enemies and captured Roshani, who taught me how to craft fire bombs. He’s now locked up in a cage at the Wenja village, but the upgrade screen tells me that I’ll eventually be able to build him a hut just like I did for Dah. I look forward to see how his story unfolds.
